Teenage Pregnancy
OVERVIEW

Teenage Pregnancy in Kenya amongst school going girls has become a worrying trend. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a total of 28,932 girls aged between 10 and 14 years were impregnated, while 349,465 girls were between 15 to 19 years. 98% of girls who have ever been pregnant are out of school. 59% of pregnancies among girls aged 15-19 years are unintended. 45% of severe abortion complications are among adolescent girls.
When a young adolescent girl become pregnant, her life changes drastically. She may not continue with her education as she had wanted and therefore her job prospects diminishes. She becomes more vulnerable to exclusion and poverty, her health often suffers.

Complications brought about from the adolescent pregnancy are the leading cause of Child Mortality and death among the teenage girls.
10,000 girls drop out of school every year in Kenya because of pregnancy. Several factors contribute to this problem: parents do not generally talk to their sons and daughters about sex, children lack information about their changing bodies, and adolescents may not understand how to control the sexual urges that come up naturally at puberty. The issue of teenage pregnancy can be addressed by teaching young people skills that will help them make appropriate decisions, be assertive, and resist early sexual activity
